Making space for the unexpected
The frame after the frame
Every session needs structure. It also needs a little unclaimed time. That is where the accidental gestures, windblown hair, and honest laughter tend to appear.
I now build a short pause into every shoot. We change nothing. We simply stop directing and pay attention.
A practical reset
- Put the camera down for one minute.
- Ask what felt most like the person, not what looked most polished.
- Return to the light with one simple prompt.
Photography can be precise without becoming rigid. A clear intention gives surprise somewhere to land.
